Willie O’Ree

In 1958 O’Ree broke the color barrier into professional hockey much like Jackie Robinson did in baseball. Willie played from 1958-61 in 45 games with the Boston Bruins organization. Over the course of his 21 season hockey career O’Ree dressed for the WHL’s Los Angeles Blades and San Diego Gulls.

As hockey’s designated Ambassador to the “Hockey Is For Everyone” program O’Ree contributions have fostered the growth on the initiative that has connected with 85,000 boys and girls from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

An amazing achievement for the sport of hockey. The following is a mantra that O’Ree lives by when it comes to the sport he loves.

O’Ree stresses the importance of essential life skills, education, and the core values of hockey, which are: commitment, perseverance, and teamwork.

Willie’s dedication and pride to the game is still greatly impacted today with players like Buffalo Sabres forward Evander Kane, San Jose Sharks forward Joel Ward, Minnesota Wild forward Chris Stewart, to Nashville Predators defenseman P.K. Subban, Colorado Avalanche forward Matt Nieto, Los Angeles Kings forward Devin Setoguchi, and Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds.

So swing on by the Las Vegas Ice Center today and visit the Golden Knights staff and give hockey a try.
