As this years trade deadline approaches we take a look back at the 2016 NHL Trade Deadline. It was recorded as one of the slowest in recent years. Prior to that seasons deadline frenzy several deals were made over the weekend 14 in fact throughout the league. One deadline day there was only 19 transactions that went down.

Most deals that were made with fellow NHL clubs was considered to be minor ones in nature than anything of significance.

So without further ado lets dive into to the big deals that did take place. Arguably during the 2016 trade cycle the biggest player that was sought after by various organizations was that in Calgary Flames Defenseman Kris Russell.

The fight was interesting but it was the Dallas Stars that would be the eventual winner in the Russell sweepstakes.

Other names that were thrown around as trade bait was Winnipeg Defenseman Dustin Byfuglien, perennial goal scorer from Tampa Bay in Steven Stamkos, and Jets Captain Andrew Ladd. Ladd would eventually go back to the Blackhawks.

It was a Staal family reunion when the New York Rangers acquired the former Hurricanes Captain to play with brother and Defenseman Marc Staal. That move marked the second time in Eric’s NHL career to play with another sibling.

Below is a list of deals that were made on deadline day

Minnesota Wild dealt Goaltender Nicklas Backstrom to Calgray Flames in exchange for Forward David Joins.

Chicago Blackhawks acquire Forward Tim Jackman and the 2017 7th round pick from Anaheim while the Ducks snagged Forward Corey Tropp.

Anaheim went shopping again as they sent Forward Patrick Maroon to Edmonton for Defenseman Martin Gernet and 2016 4th round pick.

Nashville Predators sought depth for the farm system as they acquired Defenseman Corey Potter from Arizona while the Coyotes agreed in term of future considerations.

LA setup the a Sutter family reunion when they acquired Forward Brett Sutter from the Wild in exchange Minnesota captured Forward Scott Sabourin.

Ducks went hunting for offense and grabbed Forward Jamie McGinn from Buffalo in return to the Sabres for the 2016 conditional 2nd or 3rd pick.

Pittsburgh added to their AHL cupboards as they acquired F Dustin Jeffrey from Arizona in exchange for Forwards Matia Marcantuoni and Dan O’Donaguhe.

Montreal and New Jersey swapped for offense as the Canadiens picked up Stefan Matteau for Devante Smith-Pelly went to Devils.

The Avanlache and Islanders organizations worked on a minor deal with one another as New York acquired Forward Marc-Andre Cliche while Colorado snagged Forward Taylor Beck.

A last minute deal was accomplished between New Jersey and Boston when the Bruins hockey club grabbed Forward Lee Stempniak while the Devils captured the 2016 4th round and 2017 2nd round picks.

Islanders added help at the winger position when they picked up Forward Shane Prince along with the 2016 7th round pick from Ottawa while the Senators got in return the 2016 3rd round pick.

Minor League deals were made between the Wild and Senators as the Ottawa organization acquired Forward Michael Keranen while Minnesota managed to get Defenseman Conor Allen.

Loosing out both Russell and Hamhuis the Boston Bruins acquired Defenseman John-Michael Liles from Carolina while the Hurricanes grabbed Left Winger Anthony Camara and both the 3rd and 5th round picks of the 2016 drafts.

The steal of the day went to Anaheim when they acquired Forward Brandon Pirri from Florida while the Panthers got the 2016 6th round pick.

A change of scenery was made for Defenseman Eric Gelinas as the Devils dealt him to Colorado in exchange for the Avalanches 3rd round pick of the 2017 draft.

The Blockbuster title of the deadline went to Dallas when they acquired highly sought after Defenseman Kris Russell from Calgary. The terms from the deal sent Defenseman Jyrki Jokipakka, Forward Brett Pollock and conditional 1st or 2nd round pick to the Flames organization.

Colorado added offensive depth when they snagged Mikkel Boedker from the Coyotes while Arizona captured veteran Forward Alex Tanguay, Center Connor Bleackley, and Defenseman Klye Wood.

Blackhawks and Hurricanes made minor deals with one another as Chicago got Goaltender Drew MacIntrye while Carolina received Defenseman Dennis Robertson.

Forward Sergei Plotnikov headed westbound to Arizona from Pittsburgh while the Penguins acquired Forward Matthias Plachta and the 2017 7th round pick.
