Eastern Conference Matchups:

Washington Capitals (1) vs. Toronto Maple Leafs (WC 2)

This will the first ever Stanley Cup Playoff matchup in both franchises history with the Capitals the clear favorites to come out of the this match. They have everything to take care of the young upstarts of the Maple Leafs.

With Alexander Ovechkin, TJ Oshie, Nicklas Backstrom and company they are a team that is ready to prove the naysayers wrong and finally make that deep playoff run that they have wanted to do for a long time.

Pittsburgh Penguins (2) vs. Columbus Blue Jackets (3)

The last time these two met the series with 6 games with Pittsburgh moving on to the next round. This go around the Columbus Blue Jackets seem to have a solid identity with themselves but the defending 2016 Stanley Cup Champion Penguins are ready and capable of accepting this Metro Division showdown in the 1st round.

Montréal Canadiens (1) vs. New York Rangers (WC 1)

These two original six franchises have met in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 15 times in their history with the Canadiens having won 8 matchups while the Rangers came away with 7 series victories.

The last time these two clubs squared off was back in the 2014 Eastern Conference Finals. In that series we saw the Rangers defeat their fellow original six rival in 6 games and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals were they faced the best of West in LA.

Ottawa Senators (2) vs. Boston Bruins (3)

Another Stanley Cup Playoff matchup first for these two hockey clubs. With the newly re-established mindset the Bruins look like they are ready for another run. While the Senators look ready and eager to answer the Bruins.

Western Conference Matchups:

Chicago Blackhawks (1) vs. Nashville Predators (WC 2)

These two Central Division teams have a recent history of Stanley Cup Playoffs battles between them. In each of the last two meetings (2010 and 2015) we saw the Blackhawks come out victorious. Chicago went on to win the Stanley Cup in both years they defeated the Predators.

For Nashville they hope that it’s 3rd times the charm to finally beat their playoffs demons against the Blackhawks.

Minnesota Wild (2) vs. St. Louis Blues (3)

Going into their second meeting all time in the Stanley Cup Playoffs these two clubs are on mission of some sort. The last time these franchises played against each other was in 2015 where the Wild defeated the Blues in 6 games and advanced into the next round where they unfortunately got swept by the high powered Chicago Blackhawks.

Anaheim Ducks (1) vs. Calgary Flames (WC 1)

For these two Pacific division teams their playoff history was one where they first met in the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs and then in 9 seasons later in the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs. In their 2006 meeting the two went the distance as Anaheim edged out the Flames.

Their most recent bout in 2015 the Ducks easy handled Calgary in 5 games. The Ducks are coming off of their 5 straight Pacific Division Title while the Flames who in recent weeks look primed and ready to go.

Edmonton Oilers (2) vs. San Jose Sharks (3)

Only their second meeting in over a decade these two franchises last meet in the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs in the second round of that year. That series went 6 games where Edmonton moved and went to become the Stanley Cup Finalists that same year against the Carolina Hurricanes where they lost in 7 games.

Having been out of the playoffs since the 2007 season the Oilers are ready to re-make a name for themselves in the NHL’s second season with Connor McDavid leading the charge. As for the San Jose Sharks they looked a little fragile as of late with key injuries by Joe Thornton and Logan Couture.

The Sharks are looking to get back to the Stanley Cup Finals for the second time in franchise history. San Jose was outlasted by the faster Pittsburgh Penguins in 6 games.
