TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported earlier last week has stated that Gerard Gallant is going to be adding Assistant Coach Mike Kelly into the fold as a part of his coaching staff for the 2017-18 season.
In recent weeks Gallant has been part of the coaching staff for Team Canada during the IIHF Worlds Hockey Tournament that took place in Cologne, Germany and Paris, France.
Gallant had the opportunity to see newly signed Golden Knights forward Vadim Shipachyov throughout the tournament especially when Canada faced off against Russia that featured a 4-2 victory by the Canadians.
For Gallant and Team Canada, they took home the Silver Medal after losing the Gold Medal game vs. Team Sweden in the shootout.
This news is in light of McPhee plans earlier this month that he wants to fill the coaching staff positions for Gallant by the end of the month.
Kelly comes from the Panthers organization where he was part of Gallant’s coaching staff during the 2014-2016 (fired along with Gerard) season.
The firing of both Gallant and Kelly back in November came as a shocker given how it was handled by the Panthers franchise.
Kelly’s coaching experience before his stint in the NHL comes from his day’s in QMJHL with the St. Johns Sea Dog’s organization. Along with his duties behind the bench with the Sea Dogs, he also ran the hockey side of the franchise as their Director of Hockey Operations.
In addition to his coaching assignments and Director of Hockey Ops, he held the posting of teams General Manager for the Sea Dogs.
His 2011 Sea Dogs team captured the Master Card Memorial Cup.
This addition will add another piece to the coaching puzzle for the Golden Knights as they continue to work on their pre-expansion draft preparations that are due to take place next month at T-Mobile Arena.
