Before tonights Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced to the hockey world that Vegas will have an additional 24 hours to complete their expansion draft list.
What this means is the rest of the leagues 30 teams is that their protected list will now need to be finalized and submitted to the Vegas Golden Knights on June 18 at 10 a.m.
This gives Vegas a full three days of putting together their list of players of who General Manager George McPhee will be selecting by June 21 at 10 a.m.
Originally when this special arrangement was made the league granted Vegas a 48 hour period to get this accomplished. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daley confirmed this.
Also granted to Vegas in this deal is the ability to sign RFA’s/UFA’s who are going to exposed by their current team. The kicker here is if those were sign on with an existing franchise they will have to wait when the NHL Free Agency Frenzy period kicks off on July 1.
The players that McPhee selects to be new members of the Golden Knights for the 2017-18 season will be announced live on National television in both the United States on NBCSN and Canada on Sportsnet.
Audiences from Canada and the United States will be able to tune into the event at 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT, during the 2017 NHL Awards which is being held this year at T-Mobile which is the home venue for the Golden Knights.
Official Protection Options
The league has given clubs two options in which their roster players are protected.
