For the Vegas Golden Knights they are going to have an important and busy month of June ahead of them as General Manager George McPhee wants to get going on making trades for the franchise.
McPhee had to the pleasure and opportunity and sat down with TSN’s Resident Hockey Insider Pierre Lebrun and discussed the game plan going forward.
With June coming tomorrow the Golden Knights will have the NHL Expansion and Entry Drafts to take care of along with the signing of those players likely to be exposed in both the RFA and UFA categories.
In addition to those objectives McPhee will also like to start trading for players as early as next week.
“I’m hoping that we can start doing that next week, this week’s pretty busy with the amateur draft. Then, we’re going to switch our focus to the expansion draft and we’re expecting a lot more conversation and a lot more depth to the conversations. I’m hoping that we can start getting a few deals done because I think it’s going to be a lot to ask to do them all within the expansion window.” Per TSN.com
This week for the Golden Knights they are currently particapting in their 1st scouting combined in Buffalo, NY which will end on June 3.
“We’re expecting to have more (picks),” McPhee said ahead of the scouting combine in Buffalo. “Just in the conversations we’ve had to date alone, it looks like we’ll be able to pick up some picks, and some good ones.” Per TSN.com
The NHL Scouting Combined gives Vegas a prime opportunity to see first hand the talent that is coming in for this years draft class that is being headlined by Nolan Patrick and Nico Hischier.
Scott Luce who is representing the organization is witnessing the strength, conditioning, stamina, and endurance these players bring to the table.
McPhee also stressed the idea that he wants to have a successful draft going forward.
“We’re going to have to be really good at the draft,” McPhee added. “We’ll get, I think, a real terrific base – and we want that. But to put us over the top, we’re going to have to do well in the draft. And to do well in the draft, it’s nice to have some extra picks to do it with.” Per VGK GMGM
He also followed up that Vegas needs to ice a competitive team when they begin their first season in the NHL this fall.
“We want to be a real competitive club. We want to be as good as we can but we also have to be mindful that we’d like to be in a surplus situation here for the next two or three drafts, where we have extra picks. Our best players are going to come through the entry draft. I don’t think we’re going to get our best players through the expansion draft.” Per TSN.com
Unlike past draft’s from previous expansion team’s Vegas will be able to build a better and more talented team than the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild did back in 2000.
