Las Vegas–This afternoon a sunny Las Vegas day, the Golden Knights and The D Las Vegas made an impressive joint announcement that the two organizations embark on a 6-year partnership.
Vegas local’s along with tourists from out of town looked on as The D Las Vegas and Golden Knights made this historic announcement.
The announcement was filled with keynote speakers ranging from Brian Blessing of the Vegas Hockey Hotline, Golden Knights Team President Kerry Bubolz, The D Las Vegas’s Derek Stevens, along with The Honorable Carolyn Goodman who has the leader of Nevada’s Thriving Southern Metropolis since 2011.
Carolyn is the wife of former Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman who served from 1999-2011. Leadership definitely runs in the family as both Goodman’s served for nearly 20 years combined of the highest political office seat in town.
For those who don’t know the story, it was Oscar himself who in 1999 approached Gary Bettman about bringing hockey to Las Vegas. There were several factors at the time that prevented Oscar from achieving this milestone (one is no acceptable facility to play in, two ownership issue and lack of market viability).
The good news is the current Goodman carried on the task and was able to get it done. This event along those from the past several months have allowed this dream to come full circle and to life on Carolyn’s watch.
Check out Las Vegas Review Journals Steve Carp’s piece on the detailed back story to the Goodmans quest to bring hockey to Southern Nevada’s Thriving Metropolis.
I tip my cap to the Goodman family for their never give up and never give in mindset.
Below is the audio transcript from today’s event at The D Las Vegas with features keynote speakers, Blessing, Stevens, Mayor Goodman, Team President Bubolz, and Head Coach Gallant.
One major highlight from the announcement was the $100,000 donation that The D Las Vegas made in puck dropping the Golden Knights Foundation. This generous donorship will go towards the Golden Knights youth hockey program.
Memorable Quotes From the Historic Event
“Coming from Detroit, which is a true hockey town, I’ve had the opportunity to see how Mike Ilitch, with Little Caesars Arena, and Pete Karmanos, with Compuware AAA Hockey, have impacted the community and youth sports,” said Stevens. “I am hoping to bring the same spirit to Las Vegas.”
Steven’s is a huge Gerard Gallant fan during his time in Detroit when he was going thru school.
“We’re very excited for this partnership with Derek and the D Las Vegas,” Golden Knights President Kerry Bubolz said. “Every time I hear him speak about Downtown Las Vegas, I get more and more excited about working with this part of the city.”
Vegas is hoping to generate the same buzz and flare that hockey fans saw in Nashville during the Stanley Cup Finals when the Predators hosted a series of events and rallies along Broadway leading up to Bridgestone Arena.
It’s events like these that make the fan experience of the game that much better. The interactivity with fellow fans to talk shop an important part of hockey culture.
