Las Vegas–Tonight at T-Mobile Arena after several months of the Vegas Golden Knights going thru their monthly mock drafts, the moment the hockey in Southern Nevada’s Thriving Metropolis finally arrived!!!

The NHL Expansion Draft meshed with the NHL Awards Ceremony where many of the greats in the league took home some prestigious hardware.

For the Vegas Golden Knights, they broke up the selections into 4 separate rounds where Team Owner Bill Foley along with “The Engineer” General Manager George McPhee made the selections.

During the historic event, they were using the hashtag #VegasDraft for hockey to use on Twitter.

First Group of Selections As Follows (With Stats)

Calvin Pickard, Goaltender, Colorado Avalanche. Nationality: Canada

Height: 6’1’’, Weight: 200 lb, Age: 25

Draft: Selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the second round (49th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Notes: Has 28 wins in 74 NHL starts. Made his NHL debut on October 16, 2014 in relief of starter Reto Berra. Has a 2.77 GAA and .914 SV% in 86 career NHL games

Luca Sbisa, Defenseman, Vancouver Canucks. Nationality: Switzerland/Italy

For the fans that were in attendance at T-Mobile when “Flower” name was picked by VGK Owner Foley the audience literally blew the roof off of the building in celebration for the arguably the best headliner selection of the night.

Contract Absorption

According to CapFriendly.com, the Vegas Golden Knights have acquired $74,125,833 in NHL contracts with $874,167 left in cap space. The $74.125 million plus also includes Vadim Shipachyov’s $4.5 million cap hit that he signed before the 2017 IIHF World Championship Tournament.

Depth Pickups

The acquisitions of Tuch, Brickley, Nosek, Carrier, and Biscoff in the NHL Expansion are reported by CapFriendly.com depth moves for Vegas’s farm system. Before those moves that came today they only had two players with 2-way deals in Reid Duke and Tomas Hyka.

Picks Vegas Acquired For The 2017 Entry Draft

Major Transactions (Picks) that went for the Golden Knights were grabbing picks by snagging two 1st rounders for this year’s NHL Entry Draft from the New York Islanders and Columbus Blue Jackets. Those picks became the 13th and 15th overall selections for this Friday’s entry draft.

Vegas also picked an additional 2nd rounder from the Tampa Bay Lightning, another 5th round pick from the Boston Bruins, and an extra 6th from the Buffalo Sabres. Those selections would end up being the 45th, 142nd, and 161st overall picks.

One important caveat to the Vegas Draft was the signing of Vegas resident and defenseman Deryk Engelland. Engelland spent a few seasons with the former ECHL’s Las Vegas Wranglers where they use to play at the Orleans Arena off the strip.

While he was a member with the Wranglers during the 2003 thru 2005 season’s he played in a 107 games with the ECHL franchise scoring 7 goals and tallied 27 assists for 34 points. He also collected 201 penalty minutes for his efforts with the Wranglers.

For Engelland, he signed a 1-year deal with the Golden Knights that has AAV of $1 million.

Another notable signing that was made at the Vegas Draft was former Minnesota Wild forward Erik Haula. Haula’s 3-year deal has an AAV of $2.75 million.

Future Assets Vegas Received In The Draft

When you build a club you have to look to the future and Vegas during the selection process the Golden Knights managed to acquire more picks for the following draft cycles in 2018, 2019 and 2020.
