Las Vegas–There’s been talk around the National Hockey League that Will Butcher from Denver University is looking to sign with big show and it’s been stated the Vegas Golden Knights are in the mix as a possible destination.
For Butcher, he is already on his second day of being an unrestricted free agent but has yet to officially sign with an NHL club.
Along with the Vegas Golden Knights, it’s been reported that the New Jersey Devils, the Buffalo Sabres, and Columbus Blue Jackets are also gunning for Butcher’s services according to his agent Stephen Bartlett.
He was originally selected by the Colorado Avalanche organization back in the 2013 draft class year where he was picked up in the 5th round at 123rd overall.
He recently his 2016-17 season with Denver where in 43 games played scored 7 goals, knotted 30 assists for 37 points.
Butcher’s Collegiate/US Junior Career Stats
During his time with Denver, he has played in 158 games where he recorded 28 goals, 75 assists for 103 points.
The former University of Denver blueliner clearly has the championship pedigree that teams are looking for. In 2013-14 he won the NCHC championship with the University of Denver. A few seasons later he won his 1st NCAA Championship.
He recently turned down an entry level contract with the Avalanche.
For Vegas, their situation is a bit interesting given that with Nate Schmidt being the last player to sign a contract with the Golden Knights after going thru salary arbitration, they have 11 defensemen currently on their roster.
If he signs with Vegas he would be the 12th member in that department. He will have a lot of competition in front him competing for spots on the opening night roster for Vegas.
The 2017 Hobey Baker winner has generated buzz around the league as teams prepare for their upcoming training camps.
The question going forward is, who will he end up signing with, we will have to wait and see how this one plays out.
