Las Vegas–For the 2nd time this week, Vegas Golden Knights fans came out in large numbers at “City National Arena” MacKenzie’s River Pizza, Pub & Grill as they watched their team take on the Colorado Avalanche in the 1st ever showdown of the Rocky Mountains.
The “love affair” as Golden Knights General Manager George McPhee has called it with the fans has been impressive from coming to training camp and filling the grandstands on a daily basis to watching the home team on the road at watch parties at MacKenzie’s River Pizza.
The sounds of fans conversing with each about hockey and sharing stories about this great sport show’s you, how much the city has taken this “love affair” with the Golden Knights along with that “civic pride” that McPhee has echoed from time to time.
MacKenzie River Pizza employees were working hard in making sure that Golden Knights fans received their food fast enough and drink’s quick enough to enjoy tonight’s matchup.
For the 2nd time in preseason action, the Golden Knights opened the scoring at the 5:16 of the opening period by defenseman Brad Hunt. This marked Hunts 4th point of preseason action.
Hunt’s marker came when Tuch found the blueliner with a crisp cross-ice pass and blasted the puck from the high right circle past Avalanche’s goaltender Spencer Martin.
Then Colorado put themselves into some serious penalty trouble in the next sequence with back-2-back 5 on 3 penalties.
The Golden Knights went to work on both of them and made the Avalanche pay for their mistake as forward Jonathan Marchessault connected with his first of preseason at 6:09 of the 1st to give Vegas a 2-0 lead over Colorado.
Marchessault’s strike was a simple play and catch game by defenseman Garrison.
Following Marchessault’s 1st marker, forward Oscar Lindberg scored his 1st of the preseason on the second 5 on 3 man advantage situation to extend Vegas’s lead to 3 over the Avalanche at 7:47 of the 1st.
Hyka found Lindberg all alone on the back-door store step with that marker in the 1st.
Vegas’s 3 goal lead would hold after 20 minutes of play.
The second period of the game told a different story as the scoring the kept to a minimal. It was special teams that dominated the middle frame of the game.
Colorado would finally get on the board courtesy of a Golden Knights 5 on 3 penalty situation when Nathan MacKinnon struck for the Avs at the 17:03 mark of the 2nd thus ending Vegas’s shutout bid.
The Golden Knights headed into the 2nd intermission with a 2 goal lead over Colorado.
After a long scoring gap between Vegas’s 3rd goal of the game, forward Tomas Hyka a scored his 3rd of the preseason at the 15:06 mark in the 3rd period to restore the Golden Knights 3 goal cushion at 4-1.
Hyka’s goal was courtesy of a 2 on 1 as he caught the Avalanche defender under pressure in the nuetral zone.
Vegas would come away with a 4-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche in the 1st ever Rocky Mountain Showdown.
