Las Vegas–Today before the NHL All Star Skills Competition begins the league along with Commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the San Jose Sharks have been awarded to host next years All Star Weekend festivities.
“All-Star Weekend brings the NHL family together in celebration of our sport. Our players, our teams, our fans and our partners gather around a number of very special events and activities, and our host city steps into a bright world-wide spotlight,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said.
For the San Jose Sharks organization, this marks the second time in their franchises history to host the event.
“In 2019, our stars will display their skills and the City of San Jose, the SAP Center at San Jose and the Sharks will showcase their hospitality. We’re looking forward to a terrific All-Star Weekend in San Jose.”
The last time the Sharks franchise hosted the NHL All Star Game was back on 1997 where the Eastern Conference All Stars defeated the Western Conference All Stars by a 11-7 final.
“We are thankful and thrilled that the National Hockey League has decided, once again, to bring one of its premier events to San Jose,” San Jose Sharks Co-President John Tortora said.
Probably the most memorable moment of the game was when then San Jose Sharks forward Owen Nolan called his shot on Eastern Conference goaltender Dominic Hasek in the games third period. Not only did it work out for Nolan but he also recorded a hat trick for his efforts.
For the Golden Knights players that are selected to attend next year’s game will have a much shorter time to travel to the Bay Area vs. that long flight they took to Tampa Bay this season. Also the VGK fans will have better opportunity to attend given how close San Jose is Las Vegas.
Fans can fly direct to San Francisco, Oakland, and even San Jose on a daily basis if they wish to go.
Also of some importance, not only is the 2019 NHL All Star Game the third major event that the Bay Area has hosted since coming into the league they’ve also had the opportunity in 2015 with the Coors Light Stadium Series game at Levi Stadium that featured the Sharks vs. Kings and most recently, the 2016 Stanley Cup Finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“NHL All-Star Weekend is for our loyal and outstanding fans, who have eagerly anticipated the return of this event, and for the city of San Jose as the hockey world descends to shine an international spotlight on our great city. NHL All-Star Weekend represents the third in a string of League events coming to the South Bay over a four-year period, including the Stadium Series outdoor hockey game in 2015, the Stanley Cup Final in 2016 and now the NHL All-Star Weekend in 2019.” Tortora continued.
