Las Vegas–Tomorrow the Vegas Golden Knights take on the Pittsburgh Penguins for the first time in “Steel Town” but for one member of the team it’s going to be an emotional night for sure in Marc-André Fleury.
Before the Golden Knights and Pittsburgh Penguins square off for the second time this season, Vegas Knights of The Roundtable takes a look back at some of the greatest moments in Fleury’s playing career when he was a member of the now 5-time Stanley Cup Champions and “City Of Champions” Penguins.
Fleury called Pittsburgh home for 13 seasons before getting drafted by the Vegas Golden Knights last June.
Penguins Select Marc-André Fleury 1st Overall
Back on June 21, 2003 the National Hockey League held it’s Entry Draft in Nashville, TN and the hosts were the Predators. For one particular player in that draft class, their life was going to be changed forever.
The Pittsburgh Penguins had control of the first overall pick for the 2003 Draft and the player they chose was none other in 19-year old from Sorel, Quebec goaltender in Fleury from the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the QMJHL.
Fleury’s 1st NHL Career Win vs. Detroit
On October 18, 2003 Fleury recorded his first win the NHL when the Penguins took on the Detroit Red Wings. That night, Fleury face off against the “Dominator” Dominik Hasek for the first time in his playing career.
In that game he bested out the veteran netminder with a 31 save performance, recorded a .912 save percentage and allowed just three goals on 34 total shots.
1st NHL Shutout By Fleury
12 days later after he recorded his first NHL win, Fleury would get his first ever shutout victory on October 30, 2003. Their opponent that night was the Chicago Blackhawks. Fleury would turn away all 20 shots he faced by the Blackhawks.
Fleury’s 1st Stanley Cup Final Win Against Detroit (Game 3)
In the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals against the Detroit Red Wings Fleury would write into his playing career history books the first victory of the championship round in a very intense game three against the “Original 6” franchise.
For the Penguins game three was a must win for them after trailing in the series with a 0-2 hole out of the Joe Louis Arena.
Fleury brought his A-game that night on May 28, 2008 at Mellon Arena as he made 32 stops with a .941 save performance which gave the Penguins life and back into the series. Unfortunately his Penguins would lose that series 4 games to 2.
Winning The Stanley Cup In 2009
Probably the biggest moment in any hockey players life in the NHL is winning their first ever Stanley Cup. Well in 2009 that happened for Fleury when the Penguins defeated the Red Wings in the rematch series that went the distance.
In game 7 in Detroit Fleury made 24 saves with his stellar performance in net and with that Penguins defeat the Red Wings in the final game 2-1 for the franchises third Stanley Cup.

4 years later, Fleury doubled up with his 300th career win against the Boston Bruins on November 24, 2014. Fleury was just as amazing between the pipes when he record his 150th as he made 27 saves and allowed two goals in the Penguins 3-2 overtime victory.
Winning The 2016 Stanley Cup
When the Pittsburgh Penguins faced the San Jose Sharks in the Finals, Fleury would earn his 2nd Stanley Cup when they defeated the Western Conference Champions in 6 games at “The Tank”.
