Las Vegas–With the 2018-19 hockey season closing near the Vegas Golden Knights may have found their new ECHL partner in the Fort Wayne Komets.

With a report coming out of The Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne, IN, the ECHL Komets franchise are just a signature away at signing on the dotted line to become the new minor league affiliate for the Golden Knights in the 2018-19 hockey season.

According to the article, Fort Wayne Komets General Manager David Franke did indeed state that he is close to signing on with the Golden Knights as their official ECHL partner for the next season.

“Nashville is out of the picture now. We’re only talking to Vegas at this time.” Franke told The Journal Gazette.

Various NHL franchises that the Fort Wayne Komets have had affiliations with in the past included the Colorado Avalanche and Arizona Coyotes.

Last season, the Golden Knights were partnered up with the Quad City Mallards but at the completion of the 2017-18 campaign they folded due to financial issues.

The good news for Quad City they did end their franchise history off on a high note by beating the Cincinnati Cyclones in their final game by a 4-3 final.

Originally the Golden Knights signed a multi year affiliation agreement with the Quad City Mallards hockey franchise.

Nothing is official just yet as the particulars between the Golden Knights and Fort Wayne Komets need to be ironed out first before any forthcoming announcement should it actually happen, but the Komets GM is remaining positive as he waits.

“I think it’s going to happen (with Vegas) but until I get the paperwork and they’ve reviewed it and all that, there’s nothing,” Franke mentioned to The Journal Gazette.

“But, yeah, they indicated to me that the paperwork would be coming.” Franke also said to The Journal Gazette.

What makes this potential affiliation with the Komets even better, is that there is a Golden Knights connection to this story. 20 years ago Gerard Gallant served as their Assistant Coach when Fort Wayne was a member of the IHL.

  1. This is very “kool” 4 the Komets! More power 2 them! I don’t follow any NHL Team but adopted the VGK’s when they made it 2 the Finals😎💛as “My NHL TEAM”.
Coach Gallant has a connection to Our Area as well,
having been a member of the ADK Red Wings from ‘83-‘85 who made the Glens Falls Civic Center their new home in 1979!!! The Bldg was actually built for them. They remained there 4 approx 20 years until Mike Illich who purchased the team from the Norris Family decided to “go home” to Detroit area 2 B nearer parent Club, Detroit Red Wings!!!
Much continued Success 2 Coach Gallant, his VGK team & new FW Komets ECHL Affiliate!
